Neftchi FC is an association football club from Baku, Azerbaijan. The team has participated in 12 seasons of Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) club competitions, including 5 seasons in the European Cup and Champions League, 5 seasons in the UEFA Cup, one season in the Cup Winners' Cup, one season in the Intertoto Cup and it's the first Azerbaijan club in history of the Europa League. It has played 42 UEFA games, resulting in 12 wins, 11 draws and 19 defeats.

Qarabağ became the second Azerbaijani team after Neftçi PFK to advance to the group stage of a European competition, making its first of three consecutive seasons in the UEFA Europa League group stages in 2014–15. Under Gurbanov, Qarabağ has become one of the most successful Azerbaijani football clubs in Europe (with three consecutive wins) and one which reached the UEFA Europa League play-off-round by beating Rosenborg in the UEFA Europa League, and also eliminated Honka of Finland. The achievements in European competitions marked Gurban Gurbanov as among the most successful Azerbaijani managers ever.

Gabala FC is an Azerbaijani association football club based in Qabala. They play in the Azerbaijan Premier League, the top division in Azerbaijani football. Gabala plays its matches at the Gabala City Stadium. In the 2015–16 season of Europa League, they became the 3rd club from Azerbaijan to qualify for the group stage after Qarabag and Neftçi Baku. They eliminated Dinamo Tbilisi, Čukarički, Apollon Limassol and surprisingly Panathinaikos. They came 4th in their tough group of Borussia Dortmund, PAOK and FC Krasnodar.
